Do It Yourself Dry Lotion Bars

Look around your house right now – how many little tubes and jars do you have of different lotions and moisturizing products lying around the house? Most women have at least two or three, with several having upwards to 10 sitting around in various places.
An alternative to having lotion every where in tubes and jars is to have a lotion bar on hand. The most fun part about this all is that the lotion bar can be made by you! There are a number of different ways you can make a lotion bar, but we’ll start with the most basic lotion bar first. To start, you will need to gather a few essential ingredients:
  • 3 oz of Cocoa butter
  • 3 oz of Beeswax
  • 3 oz of Almond oil
  • Soap molds (these are available at most craft stores)
  • 1 Tablespoon of Lavender essential oil (or your favorite essential oil)
  • A microwave-safe bowl
  • Spoon
  • Plastic wrap or cellophane
Step 1: Start off by combining the beeswax and the cocoa butter together in the microwave-safe bowl. Put the microwave on “high” and set it for 30 seconds. Continue to check on the mixture and set it for 30 seconds until the beeswax and cocoa butter are completely melted together.
Step 2: Take the mixture out once it is fully melted and then stir it. This may take upwards of 5 minutes to do in order to have the two ingredients completely blended together.
Step 3: Now take the almond oil and the lavender essential oil and pour them into the beeswax/cocoa butter mixture. Continue to stir the oils into the mixture until a creamy consistency is achieved.
Step 4: Take out your soap mold, and pour the mix into the soap mold. Set the molds aside and allow for the mixture to harden.
Step 5: Once the soap has hardened, remove them from the molds and wrap them in protective plastic wrap or cellophane.
Soy Lotion Bars
If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, then you can try to make some soy lotion bars for yourself. Some of the tools you will need will differ slightly:
  • ½ oz of soy wax
  • 2 oz of Beeswax
  • 1 ½ oz of Cocoa butter
  • 2 oz of oil
  • Microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup
  • Wooden smooth
  • A whisk
  • 2 Tablespoons of cornstarch
  • Soap mold
  • Fragrance/essential oil
Step 1: Take the soy wax, beeswax, cocoa butter and the oil into the microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup (or you can use a double boiler if you don’t have a microwave). Now place the measuring cup in the microwave, put it to “medium-high” heat, and turn it on for 30 second measurements until the mixture is melted completely.
Step 2: Take the mixture out of the microwave and add in your favorite fragrance or essential oil. Stir the mixture and the oil or fragrance together with your whisk.
Step 3: Now take the cornstarch and add it to the mixture. Continue to whisk it together until the mixture is nice and smooth.
Step 4: Pour the mixture into the soap molds and set them aside. The lotion bars should be set within 4 to 5 hours time. Remove them from the mold and wrap them in plastic wrap if you are not using them immediately.
