The “Tummy Tuck”: What Should I Expect?

Let’s face it, it’s not often that anyone is born with the perfect body. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have the body you always wanted, however. With the increase in demand for plastic surgery, a number of different procedures have been created to help us improve our appearance and feel more confident. One of the most popular procedures that doctors perform is the ‘tummy tuck”.
The “tummy tuck”, also referred to as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that you choose to do. This isn’t a simple surgery; it is considered to be very invasive and is considered to be “major” surgery, given how a lot of excess skin is being cut away and fat is being removed from both the middle and lower abdomen. This type of procedure also helps tighten up the muscles that are along the side of the abdominal wall, so that you will have a more taut, flat stomach once the procedure is complete.
The goal of the tummy tuck is to of course give yourself a flatter stomach and to trim away any excess “flab” that you just don’t seem to be able to get rid of, no matter how many crunches and core exercises you do. This isn’t always necessarily the result, however. If you are thinking about getting a tummy tuck, read on for some more information on what you can expect.
Who is an Ideal Candidate?
The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is a man or woman who is in fairly decent shape, who is not overweight (close to their ideal weight) and whose skin is elastic, meaning that it will be able to adjust to the changes and not sag after the procedure is done. Women who have had multiple pregnancies, for example, may be very fit but they will always have that excess skin that has lost elasticity on their abdomen due to the constant stretching of their tummy.
How much does a Tummy Tuck Cost?
Having abdominoplasty surgery done is not easy on the pocket book. You can expect to pay any where from $5000 to $9000 for the procedure, and if you want liposuction you may pay upwards of $3000 more.
What are the Risk Factors?
As with any surgical procedure, there are risk factors involved in having a tummy tuck done. There is always a chance of infection in surgery, and you may suffer from blood clots. The wounds may not heal very well, so you may end up with deep scars that will leave your stomach looking worse than it did before. The scarring may lead to you needing yet another expensive ad painful surgical procedure.
How do I Find a Surgeon?
The most important thing about having a tummy tuck done is finding the right surgeon. You want someone who is knowledgeable, who has bee doing tummy tucks for a long while, and who has a lot of satisfied customers. When you go to a surgeon’s office, always ask to see pictures of his previous work and collect some references. Make sure you call them and see just how happy they are with the job and whether or not they did suffer from any complications afterwards.
